Release Wave 1 2025: Dynamics 365 Finance

Explore the exciting new features in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance Release Wave 1, 2025, including AI-driven insights, enhanced automation and improved financial management capabilities.

What’s A Release Wave?

It’s not Christmas any more… It’s not our birthday… so why are we so excited?

It might be because Release Wave 1 is here, one of the biggest events on the Microsoft calendar, where Microsoft announce all the upcoming features for their SaaS products over the next six months (when they then do the same thing again for Release Wave 2).

Each wave is carefully phased, with specific release dates assigned to ensure system administrators can manage changes efficiently.

Early access previews allow organizations to test and adapt before updates reach general availability, giving you time to prepare and provide valuable feedback to Microsoft.

Today we’ll be guiding you through the key highlights of Release Wave 1, 2025 for Dynamics 365 Finance… what’s ready for testing now and what’s moving to general availability soon.

Overview Of Dynamics 365 Customer Service

D365 Finance (in fact finance in general) is always going to be a central part of any organization’s success.

Microsoft have been adding a lot of AI into the mix to not only increase the productivity of an organization, but the ability to view deep insights on data for faster decision-making.

Release Wave 1 sees them strengthening their autonomous financial application goals by bringing additional Copilot and agentic capabilities to you, whilst also strengthening the core offering, setting the foundation for end-to-end automation and Copilot experiences.

Wave 1 will see more previews of the account reconciliation agent, shifting the entire process from end of period to a systematic, real-time experience.

They’re also introducing a new journal framework, bringing additional control, hyper-scale and multicompany capabilities to both the entry and import experience. Modern bank reconciliation and automation continue to be enhanced to reach deeper capabilities based on user feedback.

All of the new features and user experience enhancements have been designed with a Copilot first approach, using it to offer deep insights across documents in the application, gain insights into fixed assets book, help with increasing automation in bank reconciliation and reduce the manual work involved in managing taxes and applying regulatory updates.

What To Expect & When

You can expect all of the below releases any time between now, right through to Sep 2025 (Release Wave 1) although some dates and details will on occasion change if you’re reading this a few months after we publish!

  • Put planning into action using outlier detection – Using algorithms for outlier detection or for forecasting, organizations can have a more reliable plan. By automating these planning actions and creating new scenarios and reports, companies can save time by eliminating manual processes. Automating the full plan to act to analyse process is possible with the business performance capabilities, Power Automate and Dynamics 365 Finance. The new feature, coming in June 2025 will add visualization of outliers and the ability to exclude outliers from planning scenarios.
  • Start planning quickly with template solutions – Hitting general availability in June this year, users will gain access to the ability to import and export a business performance planning data model (cube and dimension) from one environment to another.
  • Empower users with generative help and guidance – Although this has been in public preview since August last year, the plan is to now add it into general availability come April. With the help of Copilot, users will be able to get assistance without leaving Business performance analytics. They can ask Copilot questions about the application and receive responses without needing to manually find an answer themselves, saving time potentially their company’s IT support division as well.
  • Create dimensions and cubes using copilot in business performance planning – This is a new feature for 2025, coming to public preview in April. From then forward, users will be able to point to existing spreadsheets used for planning to reduce implementation time by receiving guided experience. Using dimension and cube creation copilot for planning, this process is simplified and streamlined by pointing to the Excel spreadsheets and having the system recommend dimensions, values, cubes and formulas.
  • Refresh data frequently in Business performance analytics – Coming to public preview in February and then general availability in April, data will be refreshed much more frequently in business performance analytics and providing more timely and accurate insights. This improvement will accelerate the month-end close process and enhance reporting accuracy, enabling quicker decision-making and better financial management. As a result, organizations will be able to respond more swiftly to changing conditions and optimise their processes.
  • Use managed extensibility of data models – Another feature hitting public preview in Feb before coming to general availability in April will be managed extensibility of data models in business performance analytics. This will let users seamlessly integrate data from Dynamics 365 extensions and proprietary source, offering a more comprehensive and customized data analysis, ensuring that all relevant information is included in decision-making processes.

Not sure if this will affect you or how to make sure you’ll benefit from it come April?
