New Report Shows Diversity Is Still Weak Amongst Charitable Foundations… But More Than Ever Are Reporting On It

There’s been a steep rise in the amount of data included in Charitable Foundation reporting… but it’s shown diversity remains the ‘weakest domain’

The Foundation Practice Report Rating is an annual report conducted by Giving Evidence, a specialist consultancy, specialising in the production and use of evidence in donations to the NonProfit sector that then gets published by an organisation called the Friends Provident Foundation.

The report was designed to analyse and grade UK Charitable Foundations in areas of diversity, accountability and transparency and is sent to a sample of 100 UK foundations every year.

Those Foundations are then graded from A to D… with a huge rise in A’s this year.

Eleven Foundations received the coveted A grade, up from seven over the past three years.

The report did point out however, that whilst UK Charitable Foundations reporting on diversity data has increased… Diversity still remains the “weakest domain by far”.

Last years report only saw data disclosed by nine foundations on the diversity of their staff and trustees… but this figure doubled to eighteen this year!

“We have used the same dimensions of diversity in 2023/24 as we did in 2022/23: gender, race, sexual orientation and disability. The Foundation Practice Report has no opinion on whether any foundation’s diversity is ‘enough’ or what it should be. We simply note what it reports.”

The Foundation Practice Report

For the first time, a an NfP Foundation achieved an A fin diversity in 2023/24 with quite a few more Bs and much less Ds reported.

“Although one foundation scored A on diversity, many achieved that on the other two domains. Nearly a third scored D on diversity, and 11 scored nothing on diversity. We need to be mindful that there are two groups of those. First, foundations which were included in 2022/23 but didn’t report about diversity, then did by 2023/24. Also foundations which weren’t included in 2022/23, let’s call the two groups ‘newly-reporting foundations.”
