Government Launches Future Of Trusteeship To Strengthen Charity Finances

The Future of Trusteeship campaign offers new online guidance and a financial health check tool to help charity trustees strengthen oversight, improve resilience and free up time for frontline work.

The government has launched the Future of Trusteeship campaign to help NonProfit trustees manage money with more confidence and less stress.

The initiative bundles practical guidance, a new online financial health check and a single hub of trustee resources so boards can act quickly when risks emerge and focus more time on delivering services.

The campaign is in response to recent sector research that flagged finance and resilience as priority concerns for trustees.

Whilst trustees report high overall confidence in their role, many say they could use more support on financial matters and safeguarding. The new tools aim to close that gap by giving clear, in the moment help rather than long policy papers.

At the heart of the package is the Trustee Finance Toolkit and financial health check.

The toolkit walks trustees through governance basics and practical steps to assess cash flow, forecast scenarios and check legal responsibilities. The online health check gives boards a quick snapshot of strengths and risks and points them to the right guidance for next steps. That means trustees can spot issues earlier and decide whether they need specialist support, training or changes to reserves policy.

The campaign also links to a wider programme of events and learning.

Trustees Week and the Festival of Trusteeship bring webinars, peer learning and case studies from other charities, making it easier for trustees to learn what works in practice. For smaller charities with limited finance teams, those peer networks are often the fastest route to practical advice and low cost training.

For trustees who want to act now, start by running the financial health check and sharing the results with your board before the next meeting. Use the toolkit to check whether your reserves policy, cash forecasts and approval routines still fit your current risks. Where the health check signals a gap, consider short, targeted steps such as simple scenario modelling, a focused training session for finance leads, or a temporary review of supplier contracts to free up short term cash.

Policy makers and sector bodies have welcomed the move.

Groups such as the Charity Finance Group and local regulator partners have welcomed a focus on tools that reduce time spent on paperwork and increase time spent on impact. That practical emphasis matters: many charities are already doing more for communities whilst operating with tight budgets, so anything that reduces compliance burden while maintaining transparency is a win.

The Future of Trusteeship isn’t a silver bullet, but it does give trustees a clear, practical starting point.

If you run a charity board, treat the campaign as a quick way to check your financial foundations, build confidence among trustees and identify one or two improvements you can make this quarter.
