Deadline Fast Approaching For Charity Governance Code Consultation

The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland is urging NonProfits to take part in the Charity Governance Code consultation before the deadline of 11th Aug

The deadline for NonProfits wishing to submit their views on the Charity Governance Code is nearly here, with all opinions and submissions needing to be in by the 11th Aug.

If you’re a NonProfit looking to have your say, then you can do so here >>

The current version of the of the Charity Governance code was last amended and published back in 2020 and included updates on safeguarding and diversity.

The submissions are being asked for with the ambition of taking a much wider look at the code, exploring all its content, structure and applicability to different sizes of charities in the UK & Ireland, with a special focus on the use of language and user friendliness in the overarching framework.

The Governing committee is also keen to explore potential and existing barriers to NfPs using the Code and are looking for responses from both users and non-users.

Every governance code needs a regular refresh. This is your chance to make the Charity Governance Code work for you. Whether you use the Code or not, and whatever size or type of charity you represent, we want to hear from you. The Code was last updated in 2020, and we all know just how much the world has changed since then. With the consultation deadline fast approaching, make sure your views are included in this vital work to support governance outcomes across the sector. The UK has a world-class charity sector, and the Charity Governance Code has a key role in maintaining the high standards we expect from UK charities.”

Emily Ford – Policy Adviser, The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland

Once the consultation has completed, the institute will share the consultation responses in a paper come autumn 2024, which will be followed by enhancing and updating the Code with a new version due early 2025.

What Is The Charity Governance Code?

The code has always been composed of seven principles:

  • Organisational Purpose
  • Integrity
  • Decision-making, risk and control
  • Board effectiveness
  • Equality Diversity
  • Inclusion
  • Openness and Accountability.

There are always two versions of the code produced, one for larger charities (defined by a turnover of over £1m+) and one for smaller charities.

The code itself is overseen by a steering group made up of ACEVO, Association of Chairs, The Chartered Governance Institute (CGI), NCVO, Small Charities Coalition and Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA).
